This book is everything everyone says it is when it comes to a warm, feel-good read. More than half the book is dedicated to the situation of the school in rural North Carolina and the experiences of a teacher who went there from California to get a different experience. The main characters in the book are a couple of teachers and community leaders, and not necessarily the kids who built the car. The real story of the electric car doesn't get started until about halfway through the book. While I would have been interested in a few more details about the project, the book is still a good read. It skips large sections of the actual project. You seem to go from the initial planning stages to the competition without knowing if the kids painted the car, but that's a minor drawback. By the time the competition starts, it seems like there are only a few pages left, but that's probably the most powerful part of the book. The "disadvantaged" kids manage to win the competition in an emotional and unexpected surprise performance by their car. It appears as though the victory was partially due to painstaking planning and the good luck of having chosen better drivers who knew how to get the most out of the car. Finally, I would have liked a little more closure. There is a section at the end that quickly wraps up what happened later, and while it gives the basic details, it leaves you wanting to know just a little more. Still, in spite of all the drawbacks, this is a very good book, and if you are interested in electric vehicles, it's a different take on the topic.
This was a very nice book to read. One is immediately caught up in the drive and heart of the underdog, much like some of the more common sports books of that genre. But this book also had a succinct history of electric vehicles, a brief look at the money and politics that held EVs back, and of course the impact that great teachers can have.
Electric Dreams, an account of a group of high school kids from a remote part of North Carolina who work together to build an electric car, should leave you feeling inspired. The writing style matches the story - it simple and fast-paced. I suppose that comes from the author's background as a reporter. Caroline Kettlewell doesn't let anything get in the way of the facts, because they alone are more than enough to drive you on to the next page.I have been to this part of North Carolina. It is a place with lots of wide open spaces, plenty of timber, and peanut farms. Plenty of birds migrate through here each year. It is a place where you can find a lot of old Ford Escorts and Chevy S-10s. It is definitely a place where the expression of the phrase "number 10" is followed quickly by the thought of "Ricky Rudd." It has 13 percent college graduates, the median household income is about $23,000, and more than 80 percent of the kids are on free and reduced lunch.Unfortunately, these are some coincidental forces that conspire to make it seem like this is not a place where you would expect to find path breaking innovations in engineering. It is not a place where your average Berkeley-educated young person can move into town and expect a welcome. All of those elements are present in Kettlewell's story. To find out that this really happened here is to be refreshed. This is a story that might be interesting to anyone concerned about small towns or about eastern North Carolina. It is also one more example of how well the Teach for America program is working across our country. More broadly, its a great piece of non-fiction. This really happened. Find out about it.
Once in a while, not all the time, but once in a while you need to read a book like this one, just to make you feel like there is at least hope in the world. As the author says on her web site: "I decided to cut loose and have some fun with my second book. The result is the lively true tale of long odds and underdogs, Electric Dreams. In these times when there seems to be a bottomless supply of overwhelmingly depressing and discouraging news from every quarter, I thought we could use a good, inspiring read to remind us that we all have the power to help change the world."When a school from the backwoods of nowhere can put together a team of kids, teachers, and the community to win an electric car competition, it's not major news- nobody is bleeding, it won't make the television. But it just might make these kids turn out a lot better than they would otherwise. And it just might give all of the readers a good feeling in the bottom of the stomach. This is a simple little book, you already know the story, but it's written with a flair that makes it read like a mystery novel. You know those kids are going to win, but Ms. Kettlewell makes you feel every little victory, every little mishap. Brilliant book. There is one little point there at the end. "Why can a bunch of high-school students manage what the big car companies insist can't be done?" As the last words in the book say, "It don't make sense."
