I received an autographed copy of this book as a gift from someone who has in the past sailed with the author. Now that I have read it, I can honestly say it is one of my favorite all-time gifts. I hope I have the opportunity to sail with John someday. I have read a lot of maritime history, and some of it is very dry and hard to read. Luckily for us, John’s writing style is easy to enjoy. Of course, it helps that I am a sailor, but I am pretty certain someone without sailing experience can enjoy this book. Whether you are thinking about buying a sailboat, or you just like reading about interesting adventures, I think this one is worth your time. One thing I can tell you, is that if you read a book like this and you find that you have enjoyed it, I highly recommend taking an introductory sailing class either through US Sailing or the American Sailing Association. The classes cost a couple hundred dollars, they take three days and it will open your eyes to the wonderful world of sailing. Even the most successful adventurers start with small adventures. That can be yours.
I've read each of John's books, and each approaches the subject in different ways. This one, I would say, is the most "artistic" in how he constructs the narrative. Very good book, as are each of his. Highly recommended.
Before starting this book, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it as some of these "My Life" books are testosterone charged ego trips for the author. However, I did enjoy this book and Kretschmer did well in tying multiple stories together to form one good story. As a delivery boat Capitan, I am sure the author has had plenty of uneventful "normal" trips that simply would not make for a good story. Karetschmer picked some of his more interesting deliveries and proceeds to tell the reader of the topsy-turvy life of a delivery boat Capitan.
Fun read for anyone interested in cross-oceanic sailing adventures. The author seems pretty well balanced, sometimes flaunting a pretty large ego and at times self-deprecating. Kretschmer acknowledges the "romantic" side of operating a sailboat delivery service along with the hassles, personal conflicts, monetary and time setbacks and all the other things that can go wrong with delivering sailboats across oceans. This is a fun & easy read for anyone interested in sailing and global adventure.....
I kept this one on the shelf for a while, in front of me, but awaiting and devoured it in a day and a half.I love John's writing which is not a technical description of every tack and sail change, but a flowing tale of the voyages, and this one, confessing to Lesa is a masterpiece.Loved it, recommend it and wish them all the best (with all the envy, yet partaking in the voyages of their past)/
This book was well written about one of my favorite subjects which is sailing. I experienced some of the same breakdown in storm conditions as described in the book. My favorite is lying on a hot engine, in a storm, while trying to fix the steering chain overhead.
This is a good book for someone wanting to dip their toes into sailing stories. I have never sailed or even been close to a sailboat, so a lot of the terms or "lingo" I didn't understand, but that didn't take away from the story. All of the stories moved at a brisk pace and I never got bored with any of them. I only wish it had been a little longer. I especially liked the last chapter...
I have no experience with sailing but I do have experience in traveling; this book might be set on sailboats but is in no way a technical book about sailing. I can't express how enjoyable this book was to read and found the author very expresive and full of interesting stories. He seems to be the type of person that anyone would love to have as a good friend. I found it easy to relate to his stories and found the occasional mention of specific sailboat parts, descriptions, etc. interesting and thought that they only added to the stories. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about world travel on land or by water. It's a great read.
