(Library Journal Xpress Reviews 2008-04-22)Exercise books abound -- filled with how-to photos of various exercises. But here's one with a bit of a different focus. Anatomy of Exercise looks at how different muscles of the body actually work during exercise. The book is organized by body area and shows common sequences in the progression of a typical workout. This genre of books can be judged on the comprehensiveness of labeling of the muscles illustrated, the discretion used when highlighting the main muscles activated by each exercise, by the variety of exercises illustrated, and by the explanation of structural variation in individuals' skeletons that advise one to modify an exercise to optimize gains and to avoid injury. This book seems to fall far short of other books; I would advise turning first to Strength Training Anatomy by Delavier, followed next by moving up a true medical anatomy book. Don't worry about them being too advance...they're all just picture books!
This book is a great tool for anyone that's trying to get into shape. It's very helpful to see what muscles groups you should be using in certain movements and it's easy to follow. I found it very easy to build my own various routines that I can do at home or gym .
This book a by far one of my favorites! It highlights modifications and muscle groups used in specific workouts including barbell squats how to properly do them. And more !!
This is an amazing book. It is great to see exactly what workouts work which muscles. It is hardcover...great graphics....just PERFECT
Bought for my son who is using it as an adjunct to his Personal Trainer classes and finds it very helpful!
I love the format these books have and that they raise awareness of the muscle groups I should be focusing on during any given exercise. I purchased a number of books in this series, and I find I haven't used this one as much as the others. Perhaps it is because the books do have overlap, but I also find the exercises in this book use more props I don't have, balance balls, steps, benches, etc. I also don't care for the female illustrations. Overall, I feel the other books in the series have more flexibility in their application, give just as much useful insight, and have illustrations that do the job without being unnecessarily graphic.
This book is fantastic! I consider it a definitive guide for exercise. Perfect for your exercise library whether seasoned or just beginning. Actually, I think this is perfect for beginners to visualize exactly what they are working. Contains a core set of exercises that can be done by anyone.
This book is nicely written with clear pictures and instruction. It's perfect for my home gym to assure I'm targeting the right areas I want!
