When I was young, my parents did not have a high opinion of comic books so I only ever owned one: an issue of The Mighty Thor from around 1967ish. This e-book was a free gift for ordering something else on Amazon so I took a look. I really enjoyed it! The writing was good, the story moved along engagingly and the artwork was exciting. I'm sure I missed many of the allusions to the Marvel universe, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment to any degree. I was pleased that the allusions to history were as good as they were, with the possible exception of the graphic depiction of early 17th Century soldiers in 13th Century armor. Regardless, I will probably look at other graphic novels after this experience, and definitely at any by this team.
Not long after I got my Kindle I started browsing graphic novels and came across this gem. My reading list is somewhat long, so it's taken me to get to it and now that I have, I'm in utter awe.Neil Gaiman has transported many of the Marvel characters that we know and love - Dr. Strange, Nick Fury, Daredevil....and I'd best stop there and let you be surprised by who is in here, dear reader - back to the year 1602. Something is very wrong with the world and it seems to be tearing itself apart. To fix it, heroes who shouldn't normally be in this age arise...I liked the historical references to the period, from Queen Elizabeth I to the Spanish Inquisition. I also admired Mr. Gaiman's subtle changes to names to make them more fitting with the period, and the rather elaborate plot he wove. The style of speech was perfect, the type setting certainly fitting for the times, and the artwork was usually top notch. In short, I was blown away, absolutely loved it, and highly recommend it. Just for clarification, I read this on my 7" Kindle Fire HD - the panel view made things easy to read and the artwork stand out.
I was excited, as a fan of Gaiman to see how he handles the Marvel characters, and at the same time a little cautious, as it's easy to transpose characters into a different setting and have it fall flat or feel shoe-horned, but that was not the case here. In the end, I found that discovering which character was which familiar face was more than enough fun to ease my mind and embrace what Gaiman was doing. Watching the characters reveal their powers in the world centuries past was really fascinating and made for a satisfying Marvel experience.
I loved how the authors worked the familiar Marvel characters into the Elizabethan setting. The plot moved crisply and was never boring with action taking place on several fronts. It was great fun looking for little shout outs to 'our' Marvel 'verse, like Sir Nicholas Fury telling his apprentice Peter 'we are her majesty's shield'. The artwork was lush and eye catching. All in all, highly recommended!
One thing I think this book does well (and other graphic novels maybe not so well) is pack plenty of information on the page so that you can really savor the story and not finish it in a 20 minute sitting. As a casual comics reader, I suspect there were many references to the Marvel universe that flew over my head and the book doesn't hand-hold in introducing characters, but it was still accessible. If you're completely unfamiliar with the Marvel universe, however, you probably won't get much out of it.
Something is wrong with the Universe, and it is shown by the weather. Her Majesty's Shield can't see it, her Physician can see it but can do nothing for it, and the one who Watches knows something for it... but can only watch, for that is the one thing his Order allows him to do.From his magnificent mind, Neil Gaiman pulls a fantastic could've been/would've been of the Marvel Universe, at least the one revolving around the Earth (or watching it). It feels historically accurate and sometimes seems it could have actually happened.Andy Kubert's pencils and Richard Isanove's colors give vibrant and colorful life to Neil's story, the character designs, actions, and expressions all wonderfully appropriate for this tale of intrigue, action, origins, and the end of the universe...In 1602.
Gaiman really hits the mark with this adaptation of the classic Marvel superheroes in Victorian-era Europe/America! This comic had twists and turns, things I totally didn't see coming, and of course it's really fun to see what Neil Gaiman thinks the heroes would be like in another life! I can't recommend it enough and the style and story are both phenomenal. Excellent marks all around!
A true graphic NOVEL. Fantastic writing and art. It's a little bit of an adult story in the sense that it is more complex and deeper than most comics. It's higher in dialog and lower in crazy action but is still thrilling to read.
