This is a great read. However, as I have stated before, I hate to read books on kindle with no table of contents. The only reason it isn't 5 star is the lack of the table. That said, it weaves a degree of truth (Japanese WWII biological warfare) into a modern salvage operation by terrorists further woven into Somali pirate operations. Top notch story.
Pretty darned good read.This one starts out with a Japanese lab. A lab thats producing and testing a deadly toxin.The toxin is then shipped on a German sub headed for the war. Its a weapon the Japanese think can help them and their allies.Dr. Yoshi Imamura and two other Japanese have accompanied the toxin to Europe.The sub is sunk and all but Imamura are killed. Imamura is rescued and eventually makes his was to the US and biological labs. He's now working for his former enemies. He doesn't tell anyone about the toxin two miles down in the ocean. He tells no one how horrific the toxin is. He does, however, for the next forty years try to make an antidote to the toxin. He is not successfull.In modern day Somalia piracy has exploded. The Somali pirates have many vessels and crews they are trying to ransom.Al Shabeeb, a jihadist organization, is also in Somalia. The leader of a group of them has found out about the toxin and has an elaborate plan. An elaborate plan that works to perfection.So begins one damned good read.This one has Tom Dugan his MI5 girlfriend Anna, his partner and best friend Alex Kairouz, Dugans Russian friends, Somali priates, Al Shabeeb jihadists, highjacked ships, a giant fully loaded tanker, the search for billions of dollars worth of silver, the search for canisters of toxin, hostages in danger, a US Army infilitrator, the CIA, the US Navy SEALS and the race to stop the jihadists from killing thousands.Just a great read and well worth those five stars.
I have to admit that when I started reading Deadly Coast, I said to my husband, "Here's a book I think you will really enjoy although I don't think I will. I'll read a couple more chapters but I doubt that I will finish the book."Another chapter was all it took and I was hooked. This book is not even close to my circle of interest and I am more surprised than anyone that I had trouble putting the book down and I will definitely be downloading the next and anything else that R. E. McDermott writes. The writing was excellent, the story was gripping, and I also really enjoyed the "Author's Notes - The Facts Behind the Fiction". What an eye-opener.I know I haven't said anything about the story. It is suspenseful and believable. So, don't even think about it...... get the book. You won't be sorry and I'll wager that you will become a fan of R. E. McDermott.
Although fiction, the author uses actual events in history to tell his story. Deadly Coast offered me the opportunity to learn more about the Somali pirates and how they operate. Although portions of the book were slow paced because of the large amount of discussions, the action scenes were enough to keep me on the edge of my seat. The Somali pirates mistreat hostages with torture and outright murder them if the ransom requests are not met. Hundreds of hostages and dozens of vessels are held for ransom - some for over a year. How many will survive the discussions and return home? The second plot within the story follows a group of Middle Eastern terrorists in their efforts to recover silver bullion and coins from a sunken treasure ship. This is a smokescreen to cover the fact that they were most interested in salvaging a biological weapon from a sunken World War II German submarine in water over a mile deep. Silver coins and deadly canisters are salvaged and liter the deck of the vessel, all rejoice their future wealth, unaware that the contagion was already at work.When Duncan and his crew get involved, their battles are on two fronts with orders to rescue the hostages and ships and to destroy the deadly contagion. The pirates soon suspect that those on the salvage vessel had something to do with their clan members who have disappeared and set out to attack the terrorists. Action from start to finish. Author extremely knowledgeable of subject matter, that being boats, crew, oceans, and everything related to problems associated with all three. All plots believable which is a major plus for any novel, not like the dribble available on entertainment television. Only two negative observations, Main character Dugan being a weak participant early on, worrying about innocent pirates. And a female captain who was stronger and smarter than any man but was too stupid to follow coded instructions because of her concern of the needs of a few instead of the total destruction of the many. Other than that, super book, keeps the night light burning.
