I have always liked the loose-leaf format. It is easier to read and highlight, stays open when used as a reference, and occasionally I've asked student to bring just one chapter to class with them. The images are outstanding-fresh, in color, and stylish. It is hard to make textiles sexy, but the front matter to each chapter reminds us that textiles are the basis of fashion.The text has clear terms, in-depth information, supporting pictures and easy read.Each chapter has good topic. All the chapters make a complete introduction to textiles. Good figures and illustrations are used. The binder format is excellent!A very good overview, and introduction to the textile industry; from fibre/yarn to product and other supply chain information.The strengths of the text are that it covers everything in relation to the study of textiles. . . The table of contents is very well presented and it provides ease of navigation in the loose-leaf style textbook. I find a seamless synergy between booth the text and kit. Students have easy accessibility while reading about the topics and making the connections to the actual fabrics. The synergy reinforces their learning of the content.

Just a bit of a background: I am a Fashion Design/Merchandising major, and I've had to take about three textiles class all together. I had to purchase this book for one of my classes, and I have to say I was very disappointed! This swatch book is very mediocre compared to others I have. First off, some of the swatches that came with the book were badly cut. Second, there are limited variety of different types of weave constructions, print and dyeing techniques, and most of the swatches were always either cotton or polyester (there was also one flax swatch?? What??). This swatch book may serve someone who wants to learn just the very basics of textiles, and that's it. If you want to have a swatch book that you can use for future reference, this is not your swatch book. However, the textbook that goes with this swatch book is very informative. I would recommend that book instead.
This. was. awesome.Before I purchased this book in "like new" condition I researched every review for commonality. It seemed like the common complaints were that the texta) missed some swatches - I had no problems with this! Some swatches were stuck to one another and could have been missed if not dilligent...b) gave too many swatches- I had 2 extra. probably because they were thick fabrics. didn't really carec) too expensive - this is a lifelong resource guide. there are extra pages to add new samples afterwards. Can you use a previous edition?d) couldn't be used without the text- yes you can. just keep the swatches in order and use the guide in front to name them. the text gives you more info for the pages (and assignments) but you could find that yourself...This was an excellent buy and I received an easy "A" for it. Not sure why the scorn.
I did not however realize you have to put the book together yourself... You will probably need to purchase the other Fabric Science book to assist with putting this book together, it comes with several swatches which are not labelebed, so do not mix up the order of the sample fabrics. You will write in the book your own information, it does not provide any information for you. So if you need a book to help you understand textiles and fabrics, this is not the one. If you need a book to help you organize information that you have retained on textiles and fabrics, this is the one for you.
Got it for a class. I disliked the class although this book does have everything you need if you feel like studying fibers in fabrics.DO NOT get the swatches out of order, or flipped the wrong direction.. you will be screwed. HAHA Also some fabric samples are doubled.
I thought I might find a more directed assembly and collection here, but the whole thing seemed to be hastily assembled with few notes or guides.
putting this swatch book together is a pain in the ass!! lol. There are sooo many pieces of fabric and no easy way of sticking them to the pages. I used double sided tape and stapled a few of the annoying ones.Great for the class that I took. Not sure what to do with it now.
Not hardcover but Loose Leaf. Doesn't matter since its what I need for class anyhow.
